The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

After reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, you may be tempted to take a literary field trip – I was.   The publisher accommodates with a map of sites mentioned in the book, and an article from the Boston Globe describing such a trip.

PBS produced a five-episode Masterpiece Theater series in 2005 based on the German occupation of the islands, titled “Island at War.”

If you are looking for nonfiction to fill in the background of the story…

  • Check out the Channel Islands Occupation Society (Guernsey Branch) website.
  • Read “The Jersey Schoolboy’s Story” by Brian Ahier Read
  • And Madeleine Bunting’s reporting in her nonfiction study of the five-year German occupation of the Channel Islands. Her research talks about the islander’s cooperation with the enemy as well as the resistance highlighted in Shaffer and Barrows’ novel.

  1. I wasn’t really taken with this book — but then, I tried to listen to it while working. I think I’ll try again and either listen while doing something less demanding or maybe even read it.
