Nobody Likes to Be Called Fat

Amy Schumer says she is a size a 6 and does not like being lumped by Glamour magazine into an issue co-sponsored by the plus-size maven Lane Bryant.  Nobody likes to be called fat.

Schumer’s confrontation with Glamour reminded me of some of my favorite overweight fictional characters. They were often funny too, and none of them wanted to be called fat.

Jill in Judy Blume’s Blubber

Dudley Durseley in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter

Ignatius J. Reilly in John Kennedy Toole’s A Confederacy of Dunces

Cannie Shapiro in Jennifer Weiner’s Good in Bed

and, of course, Augustus Gloop in Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
